Tyabji is the author of three previous bestselling books on BC politics, and the editor of one book about Haida art, done in collaboration with April White of the Haida Nation.
Tyabji ran for office in a by-election in 1988, increasing the Liberal vote in the south Okanagan, and in 1991 at the age of 26 she was elected to the Liberal Opposition while five months pregnant with her third child, defeating an incumbent cabinet minister and serving the constituency of Okanagan East (Kelowna). She held the portfolios of Agriculture, Environment, and Women’s Equality simultaneously, and advocated for regional economic development with a sustainable focus. She is noted for being the first MLA to give birth in office, the youngest MLA elected, and the first Indo-Canadian woman elected in Canada. She topped the polls in her election to Council in Powell River in 1999 where she served as Chair of the Planning Committee, the Parks, Recreation, and Culture Committee, and the Waterfront Development Committee simultaneously. She also served as Director on the Powell River Regional District (now qathet Regional District).
Tyabji hosted and co-produced the daily, live current events television show “Tyabji” on CHEK TV from 1996 to 1998, and hosted and co-produced the daily, live radio show “The Judi Tyabji Show” from 1993 to 1996. She has written three books on Canadian politics, all national bestsellers, and edited a book on Haida art about world-renowed artist April White.
In 2008, Tyabji founded Pebble in the Pond Environmental Society, a not-for-profit advocating for zero waste and community-led sustainability in small and medium business policies. She served as President until 2016.
Tyabji is a business owner, management consultant, TV and radio host, bestselling author, farmer and comes from a family with fifty years of experience in the wine industry. She has worked in the private sector since 1986, and in the public sector and media from 1983 to 2002. Her career spans Business Development, Strategy, Planning, Budgets, Communications, Media, Online Promotions, Marketing, Research, Policy, and Writing. She was a founder of Salish Sea Spirits Distillery(2019) and has managed and worked with many other businesses, institutions, and government agencies. She is also co-owner of a small heritage farm on the Sunshine Coast.
Born in Calcutta, her family immigrated to Canada in 1967 and has been in the wine and tree fruits industry since 1973. Tyabji has a BA in Political Science and is descended from Badruddin Tyabji, a founder of modern India and President of the Congress Party.
